Video: Tampon commercial implies 'real women' have periods (and transgenders don't) – Outrage!

Not a real woman!
Whenever transgenders are depicted in popular media there's a bit of a ticking sensitivity time bomb waiting to go off. Throw them in advertising and the bomb will indeed go off. A New Zealand tampon manufacturer came under attack for a clever commercial with a transsexual portrayed in it. The crime? Insinuating that a man dressed up as a woman is not a real woman. The commercial shows a transsexual and a 'real woman' standing next to each other in the bathroom, putting on their lip gloss and mascara. The trans pushes up her boobs and the 'real woman' one ups the trans by pulling out a tampon.

The company did not completely back away from their commercial, nor issue a true apology. They issued this statement:
"Libra regrets any offence taken to our recent tampon advertisement. It was never intended to upset or offend anyone. Independent research was undertaken and the advertisement was viewed positively during that testing. Libra takes all feedback very seriously, and in response to this, we will immediately review our future position with this campaign based on the feedback received. There are no further advertisements scheduled in New Zealand."
