Black students late because slaves were late says professor

Slavery in Brazil, by Jean-Baptiste Debret (17...Image via Wikipedia
Murray State University political science professor Mark Wattier is planning to retire after allegedly making the following remark to two late black students. This is one of the student's recollection of what was said: "Well, it’s OK, I expect it of you guys anyway,’” When asked to clarify, he allegedly said that slaves never showed up on time, so their owners often lashed them for it. Wattier had this to say about the incident:  "I did say, 'Do you know why you were late? There's a theory that a way to protest their master's treatment was for slaves to be late.' Take your pick of versions, but in either case, the good professor has used some bad judgement.

Mean mom sells kid's toys on eBay

A mom, fed up with her boys spinning tops that were wrecking her bathtub, decided to sell the toys on eBay. She put the posting up – complete with photo of her crying boys. Fortunately, she attracted the attention of site 4chan, which quickly ran the bidding up to $999,999 before the auction was closed, most likely at the mom's request. The kid's toys were saved, but they are still stuck with one mean mom.
Here is the mom's original eBay posting:

"We are selling 8 Beyblades, 2 of them light up. As you can tell they are not happy about this! They have been using their bathtub as a "battle arena" and Beyblades + Bathtub = Destruction!!! With the metal ones they managed to scrape the enamel off the tub, take a chunk of tub out and break off the soap holder. SO if you "win" this auction DON'T play with in a bathtub!!! We have recieved a quote of $500.00 to replace the tub, some tiles, and soap holder + labor of course! They had approxamently $125.67 in their piggy banks that will be going to toward the cost. We will use the profit from this auction towards the balance and then it is onto other toys!"

Texas preparing to give college students and profs the right to carry guns on campus

Walther model 4 Carl Walther Waffen Hand gunImage via Wikipedia
Only in Texas. More than half the members of the state legislature Texas House have signed as co-authors of a measure directing universities to allow concealed handguns.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who sometimes packs a pistol when he jogs, has said he's all for of the idea. Supporters of the bill say this will allow students to shoot back when a wacko starts to shoot up the campus ... or I suppose, when that football player steals your babe.

Ultra-violent video game mimics Mexican drug violence

An ultra-violent video game that is set in the Mexican border town Ciuada Juraraz has officials up in arms. It's not surprising given that they are busy trying to fight the real crime the game mimics. 6,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Ciudad Juarez in 2009/10 making it one of the deadliest cities in the world.

Game creator Ubisoft Entertainment says the game is due for release this summer. The game's promotional slogan tells players to, "Take justice into your own hands and experience the lawlessness of the modern Wild West." Mexican politician Ricardo Boone Salmon, said the state legislature unanimously approved a request this week asking the federal Interior Department to ban the game.

Brazilian clown-congressman screws up first vote

It was just plain weird when a clown named Tiririca won a seat in the Brazilian congress. Thing is, you can't keep a good clown down. When it came time for Tiririca to make his first vote, he pressed the wrong button on the computerized voting system and voted with the opposition party, instead of his own.

Opposition leader Duarte Nogueira, was happy for the unexpected support, although the government still won the vote.

"I went and thanked him -- after all, it's the support of the deputy who won the most votes in Brazil," he was quoted as saying by the Agencia Estado news agency.

A clown is a clown is a clown. Never vote for a clown!

Video: Chinese TV uses clip from Top Gun as Chinese Air Force in news broadcast

Chinese TV. Fraud. So hard to imagine. Well, it looks Chinese Central Television grabbed a couple of clips from the Tom Cruise movie Top Gun and used it in a news broadcast about the Chinese air force. The clip is supposed to show a J-10 fighter firing a missile at another aircraft during a practice exercise, but it looks an awful lot like Tom Cruise's Top Gun action. No surprise, I suppose. The real question: What are the Scientologists doing about it!

Hackers warn wacky Westboro Baptist Church – stop the hate or get hacked

The hacker group "Anonymous" has warned the wacky and hateful Westboro Baptist Church to stop its inflammatory protests or "the damage incurred will be irreversible" .... "neither your institution nor your congregation will ever be able to fully recover". The church, led by Rev. Fred Phelps, is known for its anti-gay protests at funerals of military servicemen sporting signs that celebrate deaths of the soldiers with signs such as, "God Hates the USA" or "Thank God for 9/11."

The church operates the website godhatesfags.com.

Anonymous was recently in the news it hacked the computer system of a security firm and posted thousands of document that described plans to attack WikiLeaks, the Bank of America and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Watch more about these nutters (and I mean the church not the hackers):

New $40 lightbulb replaces $1 bulb

Home Depot is now selling the new Philips AmbientLED 12.5-watt bulb – which replaces the standard 60 watt bulb, for a cool $39.97. Given that you can buy a 60 watt bulb for under a dollar, you are going to pay a $39.00 premium for the new bulb. Philips has the math worked out like this:

•A conventional 60-watt bulb lasts about 1,000 hours, uses 60 watts of electricity and costs $180 to run for 25,000 hours.
•The LED equivalent lasts 25,000 hours uses 12.5 watts and costs $37.50 to run for 25,000 hours.

Well it makes sense, sort of, but my skeptic's nose tells me that people won't be buying into a $40 bulb in a big way.  The green $39.00 in the pocket will win out for the time being on this one – at least for the average consumer.

Graphic: The most simplest and most complicated countries to file taxes in

Check out this graphic from GOOD on the countries with the simplest and most complicated (and most expensive) tax filing systems. The United States ranked 64th of183 countries surveyed.

Why we just don't apply a flat tax across the board, instead of creating huge taxation bureaucracies is something I'll never understand. Corporations have huge accounting and legal departments dedicated to avoiding taxation – a huge waste of resources, that roughly delivers the same revenue to the government that a flat  tax rate would.

Justin Bieber's best quote from Rolling Stone interview

Because I know you really wanted to know. Let's remember that this is from a sixteen-year-old kid. Here they are:

SEX: “I don't think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them.I think you should just wait for the person you're…in love with.”

HEALTH CARE: “Canada's the best country in the world. We go to the doctor and we don't need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you're broke because of medical bills. My bodyguard's baby was premature, and now he has to pay for it. In Canada, if your baby's premature, he stays in the hospital as long as he needs to, and then you go home.”

ABORTION FROM RAPE: “Um. Well, I think that's really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I guess I haven't been in that position, so I wouldn't be able to judge that.”

POLITICS: “I'm not sure about the parties. But whatever they have in Korea, that's bad.”

HOMOSEXUALITY: "It's everyone's own decision to do that. It doesn't affect me and shouldn't affect anyone else."

Outrage over photographer's threats to sue over use of dead girl's photo

Gabrielle Giffords, Democratic nominee and gen...Image via Wikipedia
This is straight from Radar Online:

"A photographer threatening to sue media outlets for running his photograph of Christina-Taylor Green, the little girl murdered in the rampage where Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot, is facing a massive backlash and calls for a boycott.
Jon Wolf’s actions have enraged so many people that a Facebook page has been started to boycott his business after he hired a lawyer and threatened to sue and collect big money from media outlets running a photograph of nine-year-old shooting victim Christina-Taylor Green."

While I fully understand the photographer holds the copyright and is fully justified legally in seeking payment, it's definitly a case of bad judgement on his part to pursue this when it involves the death of a child. Read the entire story on Radar Online here.
