BBC calls Mexicans lazy and feckless – apologizes

Woman beggar, Guanajuato, MexicoImage via Wikipedia
The BBC was left somewhat red faced when it apologized to Mexico's London ambassador after commentators on the auto show "Top Gear" described Mexicans as lazy and feckless. Still, the broadcaster defended the remarks, saying the stereotypes used were part of the humour of the show and Britain in general.

The ambassador was infuriated by "offensive and xenophobic" remarks made by the hosts during Sunday's edition of the show, which has been sold to television channels around the world.

Actually, the Mexicans got off easy. Given the almost daily drug violence and what seems like open season on Canadian tourists, it could have been much worse. Better to be stereotyped as lazy than killers.

Music society collects money for fake artists, bathroom equipement and food

You've probably heard about music societies that collect royalties for their members. Fair enough. Nothing wrong with paying to use copyrighted material. In Belgium, however, SABAM, the Belgian association of authors, composers and publishers, appears to have out stepped the boundaries of fairness by quite a bit. Investigative TV show Basta, pulled a sting on them, with some humourous and astounding results. SABAM charged them for virtually every name and situation they were asked about, including paying for imaginary performances by bathroom fixtures. This is a must read.  Read more here.

Facebook moving into new castle

Bodiam Castle in Sussex UKImage via Wikipedia
When the big get bigger, they need a new place to call home. Facebook is taking over an almost nine acre building in Palo Alto at Stanford Research Park. The building formerly housed  Sun Microsystems. The new office is over seven times the size of its current office, making we wonder just how much hiring they are planning on doing in the future.  The downside: A longer commute for the boss. Zuckerberg will no longer be down the street from the office.

Reuters reports that a swimming pool in Britian will use energy created by the next-door crematorium to heat its water. "The plan, the first of its kind in Britain, will see waste heat from the incinerator chimney used to warm up the neighboring leisure center and its new pool."

"The cremation process is a sensitive matter and we wanted to be sure our proposals had widespread support," said Councilor Carole Gandy, the leader of Redditch Borough Council in central England.

People are dying to swim there I guess.

Detroit cops and firefighters to get houses for $1000

DETROIT - MAY 11: Former Detroit Pistons' sta...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
Dave Bing, the mayor of Detroit, is offering police and firefighters who live in the suburbs renovated houses in the city for $1,000. The hope is to entice them back into the city as part as an effort to revitalize Detroit where 53% of Detroit police officers live in the suburbs and an even higher percentage of firefighters. Detroit previously had legislation requiring police officers to live in the city, but that requirement was revoked by the state legislature in 1999.

Funding for the project will come from neighborhood stabilization funds, HUD and partnerships with local banks and credit unions. No tax dollars will be spent.

Let's hope it works. Detroit could certainly use a break.

Man calls 911 for legal advice - get busted instead

A Connecticut man who calls 911 looking for legal advice on growing marijuana. Hey, this sounds like the start of a joke and in a way it is. Here's the punch line: The same genius is now facing multiple drug charges.
Robert Michelson, 21, allegedly called Farmington Police to ask "how much trouble he could get in" for growing one marijuana plant, police said, reports the Danbury News-Times.

The dispatcher advised Michelson that he could be arrested. Michelson then thanked the dispatcher and hung up. Police then traced the call and officers went to the house and reportedly discovered that Michelson was -- here's the shocker -- growing marijuana. Busted!

Scorned woman plasters internet with ex-boyfriend's pics – nasty captions

People break up all the time, but today you have more to be worried about than in the pre-Google days. A woman decided to plaster pictures of her ex on the Internet, with her own nasty captions added. The boy's mother has petitioned
Google to have the images removed, but you can still find them with a Google search. Cry Baby has blurred the eyes in the screen grab from the search results above to protect this innocent.

This is part of the complaint thread started by the boy's mother at Google Webmaster Help:

"My minor son's ex-girlfriend took a copyrighted picture of him (we own copyright) and uploaded it more than 60 times to a website. On each image she wrote slanderous, defamatory and pornographic captions. The webmaster of the site states he removed the images 6 weeks ago, but Google Search still shows all the images. My son is so stressed out and embarrassed and we've done everything we can to get images off of Google including URL removal tool, a letter to Google Legal with all the URLs because of copyright infringement, and nothing has worked!"

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
