Funny: Rick Santorum quotes as New Yorker cartoons

, U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania.
Image via Wikipedia
Rick Santorum believes the bible is the country's business and he makes no bones about it. I do have to give him credit for telling like he believes, even if I think he should zip his mouth on religious issues and stick to the economy. he just seems to stumble from one alienating quote to the next.

Same sex marriage, black poverty and abortion are all issues that Santorum just can't shut up about.

Now let's have a look at what happens when the BuzzFeed crew put some of his quotes to New Yorker cartoons:

Video: a nerd dream come true: Science Cheerleaders!

We've seen all kinds of cheerleaders – but how about science cheerleaders?

Attention nerds, Science Cheerleaders is here. Founded by former high IQ 76ers cheerleader, Darlene Cavalier, Science Cheerleaders has a commendable mission: "To unite the citizen’s desire to be heard and valued, the scientist’s growing interest in the public’s involvement, and government’s need to garner public support. The Science Cheerleader serves to get the conversation going, rally the troops, solicit views from all sides and change the tone of science and science policy in this country."

The site started as an offshoot from Cavalier's online campaign advocated for the reopening of a congressional tech office. Her website featured videos showing 76ers cheerleaders rattling off scientific facts. Cavalier told Philly Metro, “I started to hear from NFL and NBA cheerleaders with science degrees who said, ‘I want to get involved.’ I never imagined it would turn into what it turned into.”

The group is behind a number of science based projects including scistarter.com, a site allowing untrained collaborators to work on research projects, such as com gathering pollution data and monitoring insect swarms. Very cool science.

Photos: Does nude protest work? From the Doukhobors to FEMEN

Doukhobors in 1903 - not a pretty sight!
We can thank the Doukhobors in the early 20th century for initiated nude protest, but protesting in the buff really didn't gain momentum until the 1960's ,when people realized the power of "letting it all hang out." PETA has done an admirable job of putting naked, attractive women in public for their cause, but likely no one has done it better in recent times as the bizarre protest group FEMEN. I say bizarre because they appear to be a group of women from the Ukraine whose sole activity is to  protest anywhere about anything. In the nude of course. The group's listed purpose is "to develop leadership, intellectual and moral qualities of the young women in Ukraine. To build up the image of Ukraine, the country with great opportunities for women" Well yes, if the FEMEN women are an indication, they do have great looking women, then again I do know quite a few Ukrainians, and they run the standard gamut in terms of appearance. Nice try girls.

There is little doubt that public nudity grabs people's attention, but does it actually further a cause? Are you less likely to wear fur after seeing naked women at a PETA protest? I have my serious doubts, but as they say any press is good press.

In any case, The Cry Baby would like to come out and officially support FEMEN and wish them luck on what ever the hell they are protesting about.

Video: Bungee jumper's cord snaps and plunges her into crocodile infested river

Something you will never, ever find The Cry Baby doing is bungee jumping. Not only do I not relish the thrill as some seem to, but the strong whiff of danger is enough to start me running. To me it has always seemed like danger without the reward.

Many will, and have disagreed with me, but after watching this chilling video of a bungee jumper's cord snapping in the heart of Africa, you might be more likely to agree with me. The jumper, 22-year- old Erin Langworthy, fell 111 meters into the crocodile infested waters of the Zambesi River on the Zimbabwe/Zambia border, suffering only minor injuries – a small miracle.

"It felt like I had been slapped all over,” Langworthy told Australia's Channel 9 News. “I landed with my legs tied and then had to swim to the Zimbabwe side [of the river] through the rapids. "

“It was quite scary because a couple of times the rope actually got caught on some rocks or debris. “I actually had to swim down and yank the bungee cord out of whatever it was caught on to make it to the surface.”

“All the water I inhaled meant I couldn't breathe and I made them roll me on to my side and that's when I started coughing up water and blood.”

Video: One minute video "Move" -–11 countries in 44 days

Director Rick Meriki had a busy summer last year visiting 11 countries in 44 days. He compressed it all into this brilliant one minute video "Move" using his friend Andrew Lees as the lead, well I suppose only, actor. Lees strolls through a dizzying array of countries and cultures in this incredibly fast-paced video. It's part of a three part series commissioned by STA Travel Australia. If you haven't already seen this gem, have a gander now:

Video: Tampon commercial implies 'real women' have periods (and transgenders don't) – Outrage!

Not a real woman!
Whenever transgenders are depicted in popular media there's a bit of a ticking sensitivity time bomb waiting to go off. Throw them in advertising and the bomb will indeed go off. A New Zealand tampon manufacturer came under attack for a clever commercial with a transsexual portrayed in it. The crime? Insinuating that a man dressed up as a woman is not a real woman. The commercial shows a transsexual and a 'real woman' standing next to each other in the bathroom, putting on their lip gloss and mascara. The trans pushes up her boobs and the 'real woman' one ups the trans by pulling out a tampon.

The company did not completely back away from their commercial, nor issue a true apology. They issued this statement:
"Libra regrets any offence taken to our recent tampon advertisement. It was never intended to upset or offend anyone. Independent research was undertaken and the advertisement was viewed positively during that testing. Libra takes all feedback very seriously, and in response to this, we will immediately review our future position with this campaign based on the feedback received. There are no further advertisements scheduled in New Zealand."

Robertson
Psychic Blair Robertson has come out with his predictions for 2012. Have a gander, but I'll bet your guesses are as good as his. In fact , we decided to have a quick look at this predictions for 2011 and see how they turned out. But first, his predictions for 2012:

• I predict that the Republicans will win the Presidential election.
• A horrifying premonition: spandex will make a comeback near the end of 2012.
• Volcanic activity in the Northwest will be big news and I feel there will be a very good chance of a large eruption.
• There will be a bombing on a cruise ship this year.
• I predict North Carolina will be slammed and heavily damaged by storms in April.

His press release has this to say about the sooth sayer:
His past predictions include the Japanese 8.9 earthquake and tsunami, the two devastating New Zealand earthquakes, the terrible plane crash that claimed the life of Polish president Lech Kaczynski, World Cup events, accurately predicting the Oscars, and more.
“I call it ‘time projected empathy,’ where I imagine myself reading the headlines in the future,” says Robertson, “I remember the future.
2012 is shaping up to be an exciting year, according to Robertson, who has put together his annual predictions.

So how accurate are Robertson's predictions? Here's a look at his 2011 forecast. We didn't do any exhaustive research to prove or disprove the events, but we are sure that two of eleven of the predicted came to pass. As for the others ....

                                   Wikipedia
Leave it to the Bieber. I just can't say (or write) that enough times. I have to hand it to the kid – he's got staying power, at least so far. I never believed he would remain on top as long as he had, which blows my credibility as a star picker.

So what will Justin Bieber look like in ten years? The good folks at Buzzfeed believe they can predict the future a little better than The Cry Baby, and for good reason (spoiler at the end of post). They've posted ten photos of what the Biebs will look like in a decade.

 Here's one of them:

So why is BuzzFeed's crystal ball better than The Cry Baby's? The man in the photo above is actually Bieber's dad. See the rest of the photos here.

Photo: The most expensive weapon ever created: Supercarrier USS Gerald R. Ford

Supercarrier USS Gerald R. Ford, currently under construction for the U.S. Navy, is set to become the most expensive weapon ever created. The cost of this baby is a cool $11.5 billion, $1.1 billion over budget (but when has a military contract ever come in under budget?). The ship is currently being assembled in Newport News, Virginia.

What's so special about this new ship? Here are a few of its features according to Business Insider:
• Stealth features to help reduce radar profile.
• The updated RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow missile system. Advanced arresting gear used to grab planes as they land on the deck.
• Automation, which reduces crew requirements by several hundred from the Nimitz class carrier.
• An electromagnetic aircraft launch system in place of traditional steam catapults for launching aircraft
• A new more powerful nuclear reactor design.
•The ability to launch the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, and the F-35C Lightning II
Sounds like one hell of a deal to me.

Video: Acquitted of killing her child, Casey Anthony video diary surfaces

English: Casey Anthony has been booked into th...
 Casey Anthony back when           Wikipedia
Casey Anthony, who was acquitted in July of first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee, has debuted on YouTube in what she calls her 'video diary'. She is currently on probation for fraud, and has dropped out of the public eye after the intense scrutiny of her murder trial.

You may remember that Casey only reported her daughter missing 31 days after her disappearance and gave various versions of her story to police. Enough about the past, on the future.

Her hair colour and style have changed but this is the same old Casey. She talks about her new dog (who she loves) and her new computer, among other trivial matters. Casey's lawyer Cheney Mason confirmed it is Anthony in the video, but said it was not supposed to be made public. The video was leaked on YouTube.

Some quotes from the video:

“So, this is my first video diary. I don’t know. I guess I’m liking it so far. It’s obviously a different ballgame for me because I’ve never used this before. So, I guess these will be as tedious as my audio recordings have been.”
"Just a little surreal how much things have changed since July and how many things haven't changed. But the good thing is things are starting to look up and things are starting to change in a good way.”

"It's been a long time since I've been able to call something mine, that I have something -- even as silly as saying I have a computer, and a camera and a phone."
Deep thought indeed.

Stephen Hawking's deep thoughts: "Women. They are a complete mystery"

English: Stephen Hawking during the press conf...
Hawking              Wikipedia
When renowned physicist and cosmologistStephen Hawking was asked by New Scientist what occupied his thoughts during his waking hours,  he incredibly responded "Women. They are a complete mystery." Not black holes or the elusive 'god particle". Women.

You would think a man confined to a wheelchair since the age of twenty-one and for years has been unable to talk, would have deeper thoughts on his mind. But perhaps, these are deep thoughts.

Closing in on the age of 70 and communicating through a computer that picks up twitches in his cheek, Hawking turns out to have some of the problem of the normal, less brainy man.

Hawking married Jane Wilde in 1965, but separated 1991. The couple had three children. He then married his nurse, Elaine Mason in 1995. Amid allegations of abuse, Hawking filed for divorce from Mason in 2006.

This man has been around the block a few times, even confined the way he has been.

Five new reality shows that we hope we never have to watch - but probably will

I really thought we were hitting and all-time low with Storage Wars, which seems to air continuously these days. Yet I have to admit that I watch it. And Pawn Stars. But enough is enough. Here's five reality shows coming down the pipe that we should never, ever have to watch, but probably will.

1. American Stuffers: Taxidermist Daniel Ross and his family show us the joyful art of stuffing dead animals.

2. Shipping Wars: Learn how to pack and ship a whole bunch of weird stuff .

3. Bayou Billionaires: The Dowdens are rich trash. Simply disgusting. Makes Swamp People look highbrow.

4. Betty White's Off Their Rockers: Betty and her "sassy septugenarians who are hip, sexy and ready to party". Say no more.

5. Extreme Couponing All-Stars: The name says it all.

Scientists change the speed of light, create invisibility

Cloaking Device
Klingon warship        AJC1 via Flickr
Forget the Klingon cloaking device. Cornell scientists have created a technique that doesn’t just cloak an object with invisibility, it masks the entire event. The masking effect works by bending the speed of light, for a very, very brief time. This renders the event entirely invisible.

Have I lost you yet?

While this may sound like science fiction, it stems from a Pentagon backed study and the result are appearing in Thursday's edition of the prestigious journal Nature.

The cloaking time we are talking about is incredibly tiny. They event hidden by scientists lasted 40 picoseconds or 40 trillionths of a second.

"A good way to think of it is as if scientists edited or erased a split second of history. It's as if you are watching a movie with a scene inserted that you don't see or notice. It's there in the movie, but it's not something you saw," said study co-author Moti Fridman, a physics researcher at Cornell.

Poodle's brutal airport death sparks internet outrage

English: A Hainan Airlines B737-86N B-2637 tax...
 Haikou Airport             Wikipedia
Ge Ge, a poodle, has become a hot topic for Chinese bloggers with huge numbers of web users condemning the brutal manner in which the small white dog was killed when he was apparently let out of his cage. Miao Qinglang, the dog's owner said Haikou Airport in Hainan Province insisted the dog escaped its kennel, ran out onto the runway "threatening" air safety and had to be killed "in accordance with law". Qinglang added the kennel was forcibly opened from the outside, inferring that somebody let the dog out to its death.

Photos of the bloody beaten body of Ge Ge were posted on Sina.com. Haikou airport has apologized for the death: "We express our deep regret over the accidental death of the pet dog on the afternoon of (January) the 2nd. We have already begun an investigation into the matter with Hainan Airlines. As for the development of the follow-up investigation, we will run updates immediately."

The dead dog was on a Hainan Airlines plane which had arrived from Beijing.

On December 17,2011 a dozen flights were delayed by a dog on the runway at England's Manchester Airport but ended with the airport staff catching the dog and returning it to the owner. "Look at how they handled it, we should learn from them. Even dogs in China are inferior to their foreign counterparts," said one weibo posting. "Just looking at the photo of Ge Ge makes me cry, how could those thugs lay a hand on such a sweet thing, they are a bunch of sons of bitches," said another posting.

Video (NSFW) : Topless tobogganing – forget about Dennis Rodmans's topless basketball!

Dennis Rodman
Image via Wikipedia
I'm sure by now you have heard all about Dennis Rodman's wacky idea to start a topless women's basketball league. If not, here's the quick and dirty details. Rodman told the New York Post about his idea to start the basketball league along with the Headquarters Gentlemen’s Club, which bills itself as the best strip club in New York.  Rodman calls the club “mammary mecca.”

Rodman told the Post:
"Team members will wear shorts, skimpy shirts and sneakers during games. ‘They’ll come out in a T-shirt or a tank top, but when the game starts, they’ll go topless."
 Enough said about that.

What Rodman should realize is the the Europeans, specifically the Germans, are way ahead of him. In this video, shot in the Harz mountains of Germany, 30 topless tobogganers brave the cold and snow.

Have a look at what real athlete look like:

New Steve Jobs action figure to be released

In Icons, is releasing a very realistic Steve Jobs action figure "to honor the American icon and great visionary Steve Jobs." The $99 figure is 12" tall, 1:6 scale and has Jobs dressed in his traditional black turtleneck and blue jeans. The company points out that the figure has "piercing eyes of soul that will always remind you to stay hungry, stay foolish and to follow your heart in the limited life." The figure will be available in February.

Let's not forget what happened last time a company attempted to sell a Jobs action figure. M.I.C. Gadget tried in November 2010 to sell a Steve Jobs action figure. Apple said no, no and slapped them with a cease-and-desist order. M.I.C. tried it again in 2011. This time they appear to have taken the left over Jobs action figures put a Ninja mask on and renamed it Pineapple CEO. Apple was not amused and hit them again with a cease-and-desist order.

Let's hope In Icons has better luck with their figure.

Legal Prostitution? Interactive world map shows where prostitution is legal (or not)

Have you ever wondered where in the world prostitution is legal? This great interactive map by Chartsbin is great reference guide to the legality of the world's oldest profession.

But please take this information with a grain of salt. Even if the act itself is legal in some countries, the activities that surround the act may well be illegal. In Canada, for example, soliciting is a crime. Even though prostitution is illegal in the U.S., this was not always the case. According to Wikipedia:
Originally, prostitution was widely legal in the United States. Prostitution was made illegal in almost all states between 1910 and 1915 largely due to the influence of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union which was influential in the banning of drug use and was a major force in the prohibition of alcohol. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson wanted all prostitution ended near any military and naval base as America prepared to enter World War.

Outrage: British Rescue Dog Spent 6 Months in Quarantine After Rescue Mission – U.K. Now Eases Quarantine Rules For Pets

You would think that after completing a search and rescue mission following the 2009 Indonesian earthquake, British Border Collie Darcy would have received a hero's welcome. Ticker tape parade. Greetings from the Queen. The truth is that upon arriving home the poor mutt had to spend six very long months in a quarantine cell instead.

Darcy in her quarantine cell Courtesy Essex County Fire and Rescue Service
Darcy's handler John Ball of the U.K. International Search and Rescue team was outraged. He told Time, "No rescue dog should have to go through the trauma of being locked away simply because they've been part of a rescue effort in a foreign country."

Now, thanks to Ball's efforts and two decades of lobbying by dog lovers in the U.K., Britain is easing its strict rules for pets entering the country. The quarantine has been eliminated as of January 1 and waiting times for pets entering the country have been cut.

The archaic quarantine laws date back to 1897, well before vaccines were invented and rabies was a  concern. There has only been one reported case of rabies in quarantined animals in the U.K. since the 1970s. The law was obviously out of date and overdue for change.

"The U.K.'s quarantine system was designed to combat the threat of rabies in the 19th century and has now been left far behind scientific advances," environment secretary Caroline Spelman said in a statement. "It's time we changed these outdated rules which have caused hardship to generations of pets and pet owners."

The new rules ask only for proof of a rabies vaccine within the previous 21 days.

Not all countries are exempt from the quarantine, however. The new legislation only applies to pets arriving from E.U countries, the U.S., Canada and other listed countries. Pets arriving from unlisted countries such as India and Brazil, will require the rabies vaccinations and be required to take a blood test. Quarantine will still be required, but the quarantine time has been reduced to three months.

Perhaps the next time Darcy arrives back from a rescue mission she can expect tea with the Queen.

Read more about the new rules here.
