New $40 lightbulb replaces $1 bulb
Home Depot is now selling the new Philips AmbientLED 12.5-watt bulb – which replaces the standard 60 watt bulb, for a cool $39.97. Given that you can buy a 60 watt bulb for under a dollar, you are going to pay a $39.00 premium for the new bulb. Philips has the math worked out like this:
•A conventional 60-watt bulb lasts about 1,000 hours, uses 60 watts of electricity and costs $180 to run for 25,000 hours.
•The LED equivalent lasts 25,000 hours uses 12.5 watts and costs $37.50 to run for 25,000 hours.
Well it makes sense, sort of, but my skeptic's nose tells me that people won't be buying into a $40 bulb in a big way. The green $39.00 in the pocket will win out for the time being on this one – at least for the average consumer.
