Enjoy this archival film made by the Miles Brothers days before the April 18, 1906 earthquake and fire virtually destroyed the city of San Francisco. The earthquake and resulting fire are remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States. The death toll from the earthquake and resulting fire, estimated to be above 3,000, is the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history.

Hippie celebration: VW re-introduces the microbus

Volkswagen has introduced their latest reincarnation of the famed microbus from the 1950s. The VW microbus became the choice of the hippie generation, offering space and travel freedom. This concept version of the van –– the Bulli––  is a six-seater  powered by an electric motor and uses an iPad to control the entertainment system, climate control and other functions. Volkswagen claims the Bulli can travel 186.4 miles on a single battery charge. Hey, you on the bus, or off the bus?

Bob Dylan's muse Suze Rotolo dead at 67

Rolling Stone magazine has reported that Suze Rotolo, Dylan's girlfriend in the early 1960s and the woman on the cover of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan died Feb. 24 after a long illness at 67. Rotolo is believed to have inspired many of Dylan's early love songs, including "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," "Boots of Spanish Leather" and "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" and been the inspiration for Dylan's politcal songs. They started dating in 1961 when Rotolo was 17. The couple broke up in 1963.

The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind.

Review roundup of the horrible 2011 Academy Awards

Academy Award for Best Foreign Language FilmImage via Wikipedia
We know they were bad and worse. Here are some of the reviews:

Sean Stangland, Chicago Daily Herald: “Many claimed to find [Kirk] Douglas’ pervy crypt-keeper act to be charming, but I don’t buy it – do I want to say bad things about a 94-year-old stroke victim (and a Hollywood legend to boot)? No. But somebody has to. Douglas had no business being out there, and his delayed reading of the winner’s name was uncomfortable television of the highest order. Leave it to Leo – who I must conclude is a big phony in light of her self-financed Oscar campaign – to make matters worse by attempting to play along and, subsequently, dropping the F-bomb on the air. Simply awful television.”

Roger Ebert, RogerEbert.com: "This was the worst Oscarcast I’ve ever endured. It’s time for the Board of Governors to have a long, sad talk with itself. At one point I tweeted: “If Bruce Vilanch is within 50 miles of the Kodak Pavilion, they should helicopter his ass backstage and put him to work.” I was quickly put straight. Vilanch, the comedy writer responsible for countless great lines in Oscarcasts past, was a writer on this year’s show. Since Franco and Hathaway lacked a single clever line, there must be an untold story.”

David Edelstein, New York Magazine: “10:48 The coming obits should include a mention of this show.”

Boy kills mom for taking away his PlayStation

A 60GB version of the PlayStation 3.Image via Wikipedia
Be warned – this is a sad and sick tale from Philadelphia. Kendall Anderson, 16, got into an argument with his mom. Not uncommon for 16-year-old boys. His mother punished him by taking away his gaming privileges on his PlayStation 3. But Kendall wasn't taking this lying down. When his mom went to sleep, Kendall snuck into her bedroom and bashed her twenty times with a hammer.

Then, he dragged the body to the kitchen and tried to cremate it in the oven. This obviously did not do the job so he bashed her in the head with a chair leg numerous times for good measure and dragged the corpse outside, hiding it under some debris. His final act was to call the police and report her missing. Her body was found two days later.

Kendall is charged with murder and abuse of a corpse. What a sick, sick puppy.
