Bob Dylan's muse Suze Rotolo dead at 67

Rolling Stone magazine has reported that Suze Rotolo, Dylan's girlfriend in the early 1960s and the woman on the cover of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan died Feb. 24 after a long illness at 67. Rotolo is believed to have inspired many of Dylan's early love songs, including "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," "Boots of Spanish Leather" and "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" and been the inspiration for Dylan's politcal songs. They started dating in 1961 when Rotolo was 17. The couple broke up in 1963.

The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind.

Review roundup of the horrible 2011 Academy Awards

Academy Award for Best Foreign Language FilmImage via Wikipedia
We know they were bad and worse. Here are some of the reviews:

Sean Stangland, Chicago Daily Herald: “Many claimed to find [Kirk] Douglas’ pervy crypt-keeper act to be charming, but I don’t buy it – do I want to say bad things about a 94-year-old stroke victim (and a Hollywood legend to boot)? No. But somebody has to. Douglas had no business being out there, and his delayed reading of the winner’s name was uncomfortable television of the highest order. Leave it to Leo – who I must conclude is a big phony in light of her self-financed Oscar campaign – to make matters worse by attempting to play along and, subsequently, dropping the F-bomb on the air. Simply awful television.”

Roger Ebert, RogerEbert.com: "This was the worst Oscarcast I’ve ever endured. It’s time for the Board of Governors to have a long, sad talk with itself. At one point I tweeted: “If Bruce Vilanch is within 50 miles of the Kodak Pavilion, they should helicopter his ass backstage and put him to work.” I was quickly put straight. Vilanch, the comedy writer responsible for countless great lines in Oscarcasts past, was a writer on this year’s show. Since Franco and Hathaway lacked a single clever line, there must be an untold story.”

David Edelstein, New York Magazine: “10:48 The coming obits should include a mention of this show.”

Boy kills mom for taking away his PlayStation

A 60GB version of the PlayStation 3.Image via Wikipedia
Be warned – this is a sad and sick tale from Philadelphia. Kendall Anderson, 16, got into an argument with his mom. Not uncommon for 16-year-old boys. His mother punished him by taking away his gaming privileges on his PlayStation 3. But Kendall wasn't taking this lying down. When his mom went to sleep, Kendall snuck into her bedroom and bashed her twenty times with a hammer.

Then, he dragged the body to the kitchen and tried to cremate it in the oven. This obviously did not do the job so he bashed her in the head with a chair leg numerous times for good measure and dragged the corpse outside, hiding it under some debris. His final act was to call the police and report her missing. Her body was found two days later.

Kendall is charged with murder and abuse of a corpse. What a sick, sick puppy.

Strange inventions by Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison had some great inventions, the most notable being the modern  light bulb, but he had some wacky ones as well. Take this 1889 Edison Talking Doll (right) or the electric pen (below). Not quite the hits he might have expected.

Some Charlie Sheen golden quotes from the past

Charlie Sheen in March 2009Image via Wikipedia
On shooting Wall Street while drunk:  "I'd begun drinking all the time. We shot in New York City, so I'd be out to the bars every night till 3 or 4 a.m., then try to show up for a 6 a.m. call to stand toe-to-toe with Michael Douglas and handle 50% of a scene. How could that work? Yet there I was, the guy that struck gold, looking around at dawn to find that the only one still partying was me."

"As kids we're not taught how to deal with success; we're taught how to deal with failure. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. If at first you succeed, then what?"

"I was with one at a time with the other four watching. It was a little uncomfortable, actually. I wouldn't recommend five at once. There's just not enough guy to go around."

"I've always been pretty old-fashioned. I'm kind of a missionary guy."

Julian Assange™ trademarks his name

Julian Assange at New Media Days 09 in Copenhagen.Image via Wikipedia
Mr. non-profit Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has applied to have his name trademarked. The trademark application covers these services: "Public speaking services; news reporter services; journalism; publication of texts other than publicity texts; education services; entertainment services." Well I guess given his growing legal bills for his sexual assault case and the target on his back drawn by most of the world's countries, it's hard to blame him. Hey, he's just following in the footsteps of Sarah Palin who filedto trademark her name – and her daughter Bristol's.

Only way to pass U.S. citizenship test is to give wrong answers

Seal of the United States Department of State....Image via Wikipedia
This almost sounds like a joke, but in a first person account by Dafna Linzer on ProPublica about her experience writing the citizenship exam, it appears you are required to give the wrong answers to pass the test. Linzer is a Canadian and did manage to pass. Here are some excerpts from her account:

"Take Question 36. It asks applicants to name two members of the president's Cabinet. Among the correct answers is "Vice President." The vice president is a cabinet-level officer but he's not a Cabinet member. Cabinet members are unelected heads of executive departments [4], such as the Defense Department, or the State Department."

Teacher fired over bumper stickers - " Have you drugged your kid today?"

This out of Surprise, Arizona: The name of the town should be warning enough. Teacher Tarah Ausburn has enough bumper stickers on her Prius to paper the Vatican. It seems parents at the Imagine Prep High School took exception to some of the stickers and Ausburn was turfed. Or maybe not. Parents say she was fired over other issues and the school refuses to talk. The sticker that seems to have really upset parents is this one: "Have you drugged your kid today?" Kinda cute I thought!

Video: Former Canadian Defence Minister says aliens warned us about the environment

This is just too bizarre. Former Canadian defence minister Paul Hellyer – and by former I mean 1963 – believes aliens have been making contact with humans for years and have been warning us about the environment. He says humans have always fired on alien craft rather than attempt to approach their inhabitants and understand them.

In a speech (see video below) , Hellyer said: "Decades ago, visitors from other planets warned us about where we were headed and offered to help. But instead we, or at least some of us, interpreted their visits as a threat, and decided to shoot first and ask questions after."

Must be the cold Canadian winters ....
